ANTI-AGING
HEIGHTENED BRAIN ACTIVITY REDUCES LIFE SPAN

Recently in Nature, Dr Yankner (Professor of genetics and neurology at Harvard Medical School) and his colleagues reported on a previously overlooked controller of life span: the activity level of neurons in the brain. They showed that life spans can be lengthened by making neurons fire more quietly and with more control. The discovery that over excitation of neurons shortens life span suggests new avenues for understanding the aging process.

Many scientists prior thought that aging (more specifically, growing old) was just a passive process at the molecular level — nothing more than the natural result of things wearing out.

The authors of the breakthrough research suggest that an imbalance in the overall levels of excitement and inhibition contribute to the ageing process, and highlight the role of dampening neural activity. Strategies that reduce excitatory neural activity could be used to influence ageing, they concluded.

ANTI-AGING STRATEGIES
Aging fundamentally involves a loss of biological stability, Dr Flatt (Research Team Leader who led some comparative ground-breaking work) said. “A lot of things in aging and life span somehow have to do with homeostasis. Things are being maintained in a proper balance, if you will.” There’s a growing consensus in aging research that what we perceive as the body slowing down may in fact be a failure to preserve various equilibria. Flatt has found that aging correlates with higher levels of immune-related molecules, and that this rise contributes towards to death. Keeping the levels in check, closer to what they might have been when were younger, extends lives.

Why exactly do overexcited neurons lead to death?
The solution lies with increasing our ability to deal with stress, fear, anxiety and pervading negative emotions more efficiently, and building a stronger, sturdier brain-mind-body continuum.

“It is intriguing that something as transient as the activity state of a neural circuit could have such a major physiological influence on something as protean as life span,” says Dr Yankner.

"I think the implication of our study is that with aging, there is some aberrant or deleterious neural activity that not only makes the brain less efficient, but is harmful to the physiology of the person, and reduces life span as a result," Dr Yankner said.

Negative affect on Performance
There is evidence that chronic (persistent) stress can actually rewire your brain. Prolonged stress means less activity in the parts of the brain that handles higher-order tasks — for example, the prefrontal cortex — and more activity in the primitive parts of their brain that are focused on survival, such as the amygdala (your emotional control / fight or flight center). It's much like what would happen if you exercised one part of your body and not another. The part that was activated more often would become stronger, and the part that got less attention would get weaker. This is what happens in the brain when it is under a lot of stress: it is focused on producing alot of neutralizing neural activity and consequently building negative energy networks in the part of the brain designed to handle threats, and the part of the brain tasked with more complex thought takes a back seat -and hence performance, critical analysis, decision-making, creativity levels etc drop away.

THE KEY = Emotional Self-Regulation and working with the power of Theta
- What solutions individuals can implement to better cope with and control the tonic stressors that surround them.

The ability, to flexibly control one’s own emotions and cognition is broadly defined as self-regulation. Effective self-regulation skills function as buffers against stressors and build resilience in multiple domains. Studies have shown, for example, that effective emotional self-regulation is associated with better performance and social functioning. Conversely, problems with self-regulation can manifest in severe internalizing or externalizing problem behaviors such as those related to DBP, anxiety, and attention disorders.

Accredited Neuro-Behavioral Coaches use advanced, evidence-based methodology and the Neuro Self-Transformational Change Model to exchange maladaptive, unsuitable emotional drivers for better suited positive emotions. Positive, measurable, lasting results are typically generated in just 3 coaching sessions.

NEURAL ACTIVITY
-Neural Oscillations

Brain wave activity in the Theta zone (4–8 Hz) is understood to be a binding rhythm that synchronizes multiple limbic and (neo)cortical brain regions. In various studies, theta power has been involved in emotion regulation.

Neural oscillations, commonly known as brain waves, are the electrical patterns of action potentials that groups of neighboring neurons use to communicate with other clusters of neurons. In order for this communication to occur, neurons conduct electricity individually but create a bigger wave of electrical activity together that is sent to other parts of the brain. These parts of the brain then send back their own waves, similar to how a phone call requires both a caller and receiver for a conversation to take place. In the brain, this conversation allows neurons to send packets of information so other neurons know what to do next. Electrical signals occur at different frequencies and add up to become a wave composed of many frequencies, resulting in a “neural oscillation.”

Varying amplitudes are directly affected by the number of neurons firing simultaneously, which equates to how much information is sent. All of these waves come together to form a unique signal that tell the brain to perform a task, but they are never isolated in the brain. There are at least eight different kinds of oscillations, all of which serve different functions. These include alpha, beta, gamma, delta, theta, slow wave, slower wave, and below threshold waves.

Some recent studies with mental / relaxation exercises promoting Theta zone activity have shown that neural changes (even in children) showed improvement on externalizing problem behaviors directly after treatment ended. In addition to examining improvements in externalizing behavior, it has also been found that long-term beneficial changes in the treatment of internalizing problems and the underlying emotions of anxiety.

Researchers have been studying how to enhance or disrupt learning through changing neural oscillations. They call this new stimulation “wave stimulation” or “wave therapy.”

Theta State of Mind
You know that blissful feeling you get when you’re having an afternoon nap and you’re drifting in and out of a dreamy state, neither awake nor asleep, somewhere in between? Well that meditative state is when you’re experiencing theta brain waves and within this state your body and mind can go through an
optimal healing and rejuvenation process.

Theta is your relaxation zone.
Theta brain waves are the brain frequencies of the barely conscious states just before sleeping and just after awakening.

Theta oscillations are also dominant in meditation and mindfulness (M&M) and working with the subconscious mind -the domain area neuro-behavioral coaches work in.

Theta is our gateway to learning, memory, and intuition. In the Theta zone we are in a deep relaxation state and can experience vivid imagery and information beyond our normal conscious awareness.

Theta is the intriguing border between the conscious and the subconscious world. While in a theta state, the mind is capable of deep and profound learning, healing and growth.

In Theta, our senses are withdrawn from the external world and focused on signals originating from within.

Some Benefits of Theta - deep level relaxation of the brain-mind-body continuum
- provides neuro-behavioral coaches the platform to build their interventions on
- can restore and rejuvenate the brain-mind-body continuum, your biology and physiology
- regulates your cortisol levels within your body (stress hormones), which in turn lowers heightened stress and anxiety levels.
- boosts Immune System
- provides a gateway to connect with your subconscious mind –the unconscious parts of your mind that governs autonomic body functions, as well as your emotions, imagination, memory, intuitions and habits.
- Theta activates the right hemisphere of your brain, which is your creative side. A lot of inventors, artists, musicians activate Theta on a regular basis to enhance creativity.
- problem solving and learning – Theta can bypass mental blocks and help you move into a mental flow, enabling new levels of thought and perception.

Neuro Self-Transformational Change Model
The key to success in any coaching intervention is the selection of the appropriate brain-mind-body Change Model. The Behavioral Coaching Institute’s internationally recognized Coach training courses meets the critical needs for practitioners to be trained in the use of a range of validated, evidence-based, neuro-behavioral change models, tools and techniques with a user-friendly, coaching delivery model.

The Institute’s invitational, courses include; easy-to-follow, accelerated, step-by-step, intervention protocols and an extensive, proprietary ToolKit. As mentioned, measured, sustainable positive results are typically generated within just three, short coaching sessions.
