Solution Focused Coaching -in the workplace
  1. Solution Focused Coaching
       Background
Solution Focused therapy is perhaps the most closely aligned therapy to coaching. Solution Focused brief therapy (SFBT) is
based upon Milton Erickson's Methodologies. The approach used today was developed by the Brief family Therapy Center in
Milwaukee. Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a short-term goal-focused therapeutic approach which helps clients change by
constructing solutions. Some of the shared aspects between coaching and the solution focus therapy model are:

       - Both Solution Focused therapy and coaching recognise the critical role of trust and commitment in the partnership.
Coaching techniques are likely to prove ineffective in the absence of a genuine, trusting, caring relationship.
       - Both Solution Focused therapy and coaching are focused on building upon the client's own strengths, competencies
and resources. It is assumed that the client has the answers within himself/herself.
       - Both Solution Focused therapy and coaching recognise that all clients have the potential for growth and self-discovery.
       - There is always an expectancy of change.
       - The partnership can require the therapist or coach to be supportive, directive, challenging and confronting when necessary.
       - The client's definition of the problem or issue provides the agenda for problem solving.
       - The focus of both disciplines is clear, attainable goals.
       - Both Solution Focused therapy and coaching assume that we often understand the past by reflecting on the present and
the future rather than by a direct and lengthy historical investigation.
       - Both Solution Focused therapy and coaching underscore the importance of the client's choice and responsibility regarding
         change.
       - Both Solution Focused therapy and coaching view resistance as something that can be worked with.

       2. Solution Focused Coaching

For example; in the world's top-rated business coaching course (ICAA Survey 2004)
there is an inclusive rather than a
       prescriptive approach. In the extensive,
invitational course several valid scientific models of behavioral change, including
'Solution Focused Coaching' are extensively reviewed. However, only evidence-based, validated, behavioral scientific models,
       accelerated behavioral change tools
and techniques etc are used in the invitational, fast-tracked, 4 Day, Very Small Group

Certified Master Coach course (conducted by Dr Skiffington in New York, London, Sydney etc).
Course participants learn
first-hand, how to best select and apply the appropriate model to the intervention they are working in.
