The first peer-reviewed coaching article was a manager-as-coach study published in 1937. In 1964 research was published on training managers to become more effective coaches. According to recent research, the term coaching was first widely used in the workplace to describe the practice of consultants employing primary-level counselling and psychological change models in an effort to make them seem less threatening and remedial. The re-labeling of this intervention to promote professional development was successful, and from the late 1990’s, organizations began to seriously invest in coaching as a means to assist an employee's growth and progress.
